CHAPTER 7

As Nu frolicked farther and farther away, Draculaura turned back to her ghoulfriends. “Time to regroup,” she announced. “Operation Find Cleo is back on.”

“All right!” cheered Frankie. “So… now what?”

“One tomb down… about a billion to go,” Clawdeen said. “Where should we start?”

Draculaura shielded her eyes as she stared out at the horizon. There weren’t exactly a billion pyramids to search… but there were definitely more than a few.

“I have no idea,” Draculaura admitted. “I guess we should go to the next closest pyramid and take it from there.”

Frankie held up her hands, trying to gauge the distance between the pyramids. “It looks as if the pyramids are… hmm… you know, it’s impossible to be completely certain, not without some surveyor’s instruments or measurement tools or—”

“What’s your best guess?” Clawdeen interrupted her.

“I think it’s that one,” Frankie said, pointing at a pyramid to the left. “It looks about three-point-two-eight kilometers away… give or take.”

“Then let’s go,” Draculaura said. “Come on—it will be like a road trip.”

“Minus the road,” Clawdeen joked as she dumped some sand out of her shoes.

“Yowch!” Draculaura cringed as she watched a stream of sand pour out of Clawdeen’s shoe. “That looks painful.”

“I’m thinking these platform cutouts were not the best choice for a rescue mission in the desert,” Clawdeen said. Then she pushed her hair back. “It is so hot.”

“I know,” Draculaura replied, fanning herself with her hand.

“Hey,” Frankie said, sounding concerned. “You’re getting all pink!”

“Is my eye shadow smudged?” Draculaura asked.

“Um, not quite…” Clawdeen said with a look of concern.

“You might be getting a sunburn,” Frankie told her.

“A what?” Draculaura repeated.

“A sunburn. You know,” Frankie tried to explain. “The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage and even burn skin—especially delicate skin that hasn’t had much exposure to the sun.”

“You mean I’m getting burned?” Draculaura yelped. “From the sun?”

“Did you put on sunscream today?” asked Clawdeen.

“No! I don’t exactly have a ton of experience with leaving the house during the daytime,” Draculaura cried. “This is terrible. What am I going to do? I wish we’d brought some water,” Draculaura said, licking her dry lips.

“Me too. I’m super parched,” Clawdeen agreed. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take. My hair is too thick for this kind of heat! I’m roasting here, ghouls.”

“I would give anything for an iced Mummy Mocha at the Creepeteria right now,” Draculaura said longingly.

“Come on, ghouls! We can do this!” Frankie urged them. “We’re, like, almost halfway there. Remember how cool and shady the last pyramid was? We can definitely chill at the next one for a little while.”

“It’s so far away,” Clawdeen said. “And the sweaty look is not in right now.”

“Just keep your eyes on the prize,” Frankie urged her, flinging her hand out as she pointed at the pyramid. The motion wasn’t much—but it was enough to make the loose stitches unravel, causing Frankie’s hand to go flying across the desert! It landed with a loud thump at the crest of a sand dune several feet away.
